It made its first appearance in the \u003cem\u003eAtlantic Monthly\u003c\/em\u003e for June 1862, shortly after the death of its author, who had corrected the proof, in part at least, during his last illness. Thoreau had contributed this essay, together with \u003cem\u003eAutumnal Tints\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eWild Apples\u003c\/em\u003e, at the solicitation of James T. Fields, then editor of the \u003cem\u003eAtlantic\u003c\/em\u003e.
