She is an author, preservationist, and performance artist. She is a founder of the Gullah\/Geechee Sea Island Coalition who in 1999 became the first Gullah to speak before the UN. She travels around the world to address issues of the threats to indigenous people from climate change and loss of habitat. She has written numerous books and has consulted on movies and historic documentaries.\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eAl Hawkins:\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e - Exposure to and experiences with the diverse people and lifestyles have all become the spring from which Al's inspiration flows.
