He was imprisoned for six months during the First World War as a conscientious objector and, after a wandering existence in Europe, in 1923 met Ezra Pound, who published his early poetry in \u003ci\u003eActive Anthology\u003c\/i\u003e (1933). It wasn't until 1964 that he received widespread attention in Britain, with the publication of \u003ci\u003eThe Spoils\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eFirst Book of Odes \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eLoquitur.\u003c\/i\u003e The publication of his most famous work, \u003ci\u003eBriggflats\u003c\/i\u003e (1966), led to an Arts Council Bursary and a Northern Arts Poetry Fellowship at the universities of Durham and Newcastle. He died in 1985. Don Share is the editor of \u003ci\u003ePoetry\u003c\/i\u003emagazine.
