She specializes in 18th- and 19th-century Atlantic literatures, democratic theory, and the work of Herman Melville. Her latest book, \u003cem\u003eMelville's Democracy: Radical Figuration and Political Form\u003c\/em\u003e, was published in 2023. She is also the author of \u003cem\u003eDemocracy's Spectacle: Sovereignty and Public Life in Antebellum American Writing\u003c\/em\u003e (2010), co-editor of \u003cem\u003eThe Last Western: Deadwood and the End of American Empire\u003c\/em\u003e (2013), and Associate editor of \u003cem\u003eLeviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies\u003c\/em\u003e. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eMichael Jonik teaches American literature and critical theory at the University of Sussex.
