His interest in geology was inspired when, as a rookie reporter in 1980, he was assigned to cover the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. His retirement in 2013 allowed him to travel the West with his wife Karen, towing a travel trailer and camping in beautiful places. It also meant freedom to indulge in researching natural and cultural history.
