It is a genuine Hurrian toponym meaning\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e'He\/She (a God\/the King) has built (the palace)' and it is equivalent to Old Hurrian \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eba-'à-ás-to\/um\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e in the Tis-atal inscription, analysed and normalised as \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa=ast=o=m\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, and translated as 'He (Tis-atal) has built (a temple)', cf. Th. Richter (\u003cem\u003eBGH\u003c\/em\u003e, 285-286), s.v. \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cem\u003epaḫ-\u003c\/em\u003e II [\u003cem\u003epassim\u003c\/em\u003e] 'to build', \u003cem\u003epa('\/h)-\u003c\/em\u003e, cf. G. Wilhelm, 1988b, 55. The following phases of phonetic development are likely: \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eba-'à-ás-to\/um\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e = \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa('\/h)=ast=o=m \u0026gt;\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa=j=ast=o=m\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e \u0026gt; \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa=j=(a)st=o=m\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e \u0026gt; \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa=j=st=o=m\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e (wr. \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa-i-to\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e in Linear A). Transitional glide \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-j-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e (\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-i-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e in Linear A \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa-i-to\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e) distinguished \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-a-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e of the root \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e from the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-a-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e of root-extension \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-ast-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e and eventually the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-a-\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e of \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-ast- \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003edisappeared as a result of \u003cem\u003esyncope\u003c\/em\u003e. For Linear B \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003epa-i-to\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e (KN Da 1163+1400, \u003cem\u003eal\u003c\/em\u003e.) the Old Hurrian ending in \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e=o=m\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e had to be changed into a Hellenized form in \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-oς \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e(\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-os\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e): \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e Φαιστός\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e (Phaistos). The ancient name of the palace of Hagia Triada, \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eka-pa\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e (frequent in Linear A, but only at Hagia Triada), was the first Hurrian toponym detected in Linear A and interpreted as \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eḪalba\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, Hurrian name of Aleppo (\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eḪalab\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e in Semitic) with the Linear A ethnic \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eka-pa-qe \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e(HT 6a.4-5) = syllabic cuneiform\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e Ḫalbaḫe \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e= alphabetic cuneiform \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eḪlbġ \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e'Man of \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eḪalba\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e', \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e'Man of Aleppo' (Hurrian ethnic suffix \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-ḫe\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e).\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eToponym \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eka-pa\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e and ethnic \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eka-pa-jo\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e (with Greek ethnic suffix \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e-yoς\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e) were already known from the Linear B tablets from Knossos. Linear A \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eku-mi \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e(HT 110a.1) may well be the Minoan-Hurrian toponym \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eKummi\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, present \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eKommos\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, the Minoan harbour of Phaistos and Hagia Triada on the south coast of Crete, recently excavated by the Canadian G. Cadogan and his team. Cretan \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eKummi\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e is probably derived from the name of the city of \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eKumma\/e\/i\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cem\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eor \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eKummiya\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e in Anatolia, derived from Hurrian \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003ekum- \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e'to build \/ erect \/ pile up'.
