However, examining the skiffle\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emusic scene shows that the roots of skiffle were in country; the roots of John Lennon's Quarrymen\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewere in country and western, which was reflected in the songs of The Beatles. Liverpool groups\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewere playing a mixture of country, rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, rockabilly and whatever else it\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ediscovered. Groups had to decide which route to take.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHowever country music wasn't completely new to Liverpool because of skiffle. Hank Walters formed\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehis first group around 1947, while still at school. There was a country scene in Liverpool in the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e1940s, when Liverpool sailors brought records back from America. They brought jazz, country, R \u0026amp; B\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand everything else that was for sale in the record stores of New York and Boston. When radio\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebrought those American hits to the ears of British people, another music revolution was taking place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLiverpool, the last Western frontier of England, would find it had more in common with Nashville\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethan London. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSo in 1962, Phil Brady decided to act on the influence of country music in his life and start his\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efirst band, going on to become the #1 country artist in Britain, receiving an award from Roy Orbison at\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe first British Country Music Awards. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePhil, from the Dingle, met and toured with some of the biggest names in country music, like Slim\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhitman, Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, Hank Snow and, when he visited Nashville in 1968, met up with\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eChet Atkins and George Hamilton IV, and spent the day at Willie Nelson's ranch.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe recorded several albums and singles, including the very first 45rpm single for the new Cavern\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSound Ltd.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePhil had a fan club, run by Frank Nash, who saved many of his photos, flyers and newspaper cuttings, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhich are reproduced here for an insight into the musical career of one of Britain's greatest ever\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecountry music stars. In the Dingle, he met his wife, Alix. Not long after marrying, they left The Dingle and bought a house near Penny Lane. They have three daughters, Philippa, Lauren and Ashleigh, who were born in the same hospital as John Lennon and they attended Dovedale School, where John Lennon and George Harrison began their education. When illness forced retirement upon David at the age of 35, he began a quest to discover as much about The Beatles and Liverpool that he could. He started to write for the British Beatles Fan Club magazine in 2000. His first book, first published in 2009 is now on its Third Edition: Liddypool: Birthplace of The Beatles. His second book, The Fab one hundred and Four: The Evolution of The Beatles, was published in 2013 to critical acclaim. It featured every family member, friend and musician who contributed to the story of The Beatles, including the previously unknown school friend of John who started it all. In 2016, he was a co-author with Hunter Davies, the only authorised Beatles biographer, on The Beatles Book, with fellow authors Keith Badman and Spencer Leigh. Published in 2018, his third book, with co-author Garry Popper, is Finding the Fourth Beatle, which tells the story of the 23 drummers who put the beat behind the Fab Three. He was also the Associate Producer and historical consultant for Looking For Lennon (2018), a documentary film about the life of the enigmatic Beatle. Coming in 2020 is The Country of Liverpool: Nashville of the North, covering the country music scene in Liverpool and the country roots of The Beatles. In 2021, ACC is publishing The Beatles Fab Four Cities, co-written with Beatles guides Richard Porter and Susan Ryan, a book looking at the four cities that defined The Beatles career: Liverpool, Hamburg, London and New York.
