One that \u003cbr\u003egained prominence was the Double Perpetrator hypothesis according to which Iraq had \u003cbr\u003esupplied the sophisticated anthrax spores while al-Qaeda had supplied the foot soldiers \u003cbr\u003eresponsible for preparing and sending the letters. This hypothesis was eagerly reported by \u003cbr\u003ethe mainstream media. It came to grief quickly when scientists discovered that the \u003cbr\u003eanthrax spores had a domestic source and appeared to come from the heart of the US \u003cbr\u003emilitary and intelligence communities. \u003cbr\u003eThe FBI rapidly began a search for \"the anthrax killer,\" promoting the idea that there was \u003cbr\u003ea lone wolf perpetrator within the military community--a renegade, an unbalanced person \u003cbr\u003ewhose behavior revealed nothing of significance about structures and institutions of the \u003cbr\u003edeep state. In 2008 the Bureau named Dr. Bruce Ivins of the United States Army Medical \u003cbr\u003eResearch Institute of Infectious Diseases as the \"anthrax killer.\" Ivins had conveniently \u003cbr\u003edied a week before being named and could not fight back in court. Ivins remains the \u003cbr\u003eFBI's choice to this day: the case was closed in 2010. This book support with a great deal \u003cbr\u003eof evidence the following four assertions: \u003cbr\u003e(a) the anthrax letter attacks were carried out by a group of perpetrators, not by a \"lone \u003cbr\u003ewolf;\" \u003cbr\u003e(b) the group that perpetrated this crime was composed, in whole or in part, of deep \u003cbr\u003einsiders within the U.S. state apparatus; \u003cbr\u003e(c) these insiders were connected to the perpetrators of the 9\/11 attacks; \u003cbr\u003e(d) the anthrax attacks were meant to play an important role in the strategy of redefinition \u003cbr\u003ethrough which the Cold War was replaced by a new global conflict framework, the \u003cbr\u003eGlobal War on Terror.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003eAbout the Author\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGraeme MacQueen received his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Harvard University and taught in the Religious Studies Department of McMaster University for 30 years.
