She has over a decade of clinical experience in acute and long-term care settings and over 35 years of experience in higher education. Her program of research focuses on the development and testing of psychosocial interventions for dementia-related behaviors and cognitive symptoms exhibited by people living with dementia. Additionally, she conducts pragmatic trials of implementation strategies designed to assist staff in long-term care settings to use evidence-based approaches for the behavioral and cognitive symptoms of residents. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health\/National Institute of Nursing Research, the Alzheimer's Association, the Hartford Foundation, the Commonwealth Foundation, and the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation. Dr. Kolanowski has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals. She is a member of the grassroots Dementia Action Alliance, a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Gerontological Society of America, and the founding director of the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn State University. Dr. Kolanowski has served as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer's Association, and a number of international funding agencies and is on the editorial board of several scientific journals. Dr. Lyons has written chapters for the books Medicine and Health Care Into the 21st Century, Leadership in Rural Health: Interprofessional Education and Practice, and Allied Education, Practice Issues and Trends Into the 21st Millennium, and he served as coeditor for the latter. He has served on the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Health Services Research: Training and Workforce Issues and has recently participated in their Workshop on the Allied Health Workforce and Services. Dr. Lyons has also written a white paper for the National Commission on Allied Health on Current Organizational Research Agendas Related to Allied Health Practices. For 10 years, Dr. Lyons served as editor of the Journal of Allied Health, the scholarly journal of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, has received the J. Warren Perry Distinguished Author Award, and has been elected a fellow in that organization.
