A curriculum writer and former English teacher, she has educated children and teens in traditional and alternative learning settings for 15 years. As an inaugural AMAL fellow with the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (MuslimARC), she developed foundational curricular frameworks for youth and adult anti-racist programming. Her picture books and short stories, which feature young Black and Muslim protagonists, have been recognized as the best in children's literature by\u003ci\u003e TIME\u003c\/i\u003e magazine, Read Across America, and NPR. These works include \u003ci\u003eMommy's Khimar\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eOnce Upon an Eid\u003c\/i\u003e (anthology contributor), \u003ci\u003eGrounded\u003c\/i\u003e (coauthor), \u003ci\u003eYour Name Is a Song\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eAbdul's Story\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ci\u003eHold Them Close\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003cb\u003eShahrzad Maydani \u003c\/b\u003eis an illustrator of Iranian-English descent, raised in Niger and Kenya.
