In graduate school, he taught Freshman English and went on to teach both English and art at the high school level for another four years. In the 1970s, he worked in construction and was a lead carpenter on the first completely solar-heated house built in Rhode Island. In the 80s and until retirement, he worked in the commercial window industry and created custom fenestration for energy-efficient buildings and landmark structures.
