He received his MS in geology from the University of Toledo and his PhD in geology from the Ohio State University. His recent research-focused on the history of Midwest geological studies, the use of building stones in historical buildings, quarry and mine development, and the architecture of railroad depots-reflects his long-standing interest in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century history.
