In 1952, he contracted polio, and as a four-year-old in 1954, he was hospitalized for a full year for surgery and rehab. The results of this disease left not an invalid, but a very determined child who would do just about everything any other child did, all the while wearing a full left leg brace (which he still wears to this day). His career started as a Histology Technician and eventually evolved into becoming supervisor of Anatomic Pathology.
