Her fourth novel, \u003ci\u003eThe Elected Member\u003c\/i\u003e, won the 1970 Booker prize. She was shortlisted for the same prize again in 1978 for \u003ci\u003eA Five Year Sentence\u003c\/i\u003e. Her last novel, \u003ci\u003eThe Sergeants' Tale\u003c\/i\u003e, was published in 2003. She was an honorary vice-president of International PEN and served as a Booker judge in 1986.
