He attended Ohio State University for more than eight years, flunking out several times. At first he studied architecture. In this second phase of his long university career he studied literature and creative writing. He has served as an art director for \u003ci\u003eNational Geographic Magazine\u003c\/i\u003e, has written for \u003ci\u003eSmithsonian\u003c\/i\u003e magazine, \u003ci\u003eCricket\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eMuse\u003c\/i\u003e magazines, \u003ci\u003eHarper's\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eChesapeake Bay Magazine\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSail\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eWoodenBoat\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eMaine Boats Homes \u0026amp; Harbors\u003c\/i\u003e, and others.
