Currently, Atwood is Associate Professor of journalism at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where her research focuses on the relationship between the news media and political and social revolutions. Her research into fatal assaults on journalists in the United States was awarded first place prize for a faculty paper in the History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2021.
