He received a B.A. degree in Sacred Theology from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University in 1941; a B.S. degree in library science from Columbia University in 1948; an M.A. degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1948; and a Ph.D. from New York University in 1953. He served in the Navy as a chaplain during World War II. For many years, he was a librarian at NYU.
