The same\r\nqualities illuminate this collection of five\r\nAllettamenti da Camera, composed in\r\nRome in 1740 and dedicated to His Royal\r\nHighness Henry Duke of York. By that stage\r\nin his career, the Rimini-born Tessarini had\r\nworked for courts and aristocratic patrons\r\nin Venice and Urbino. He had lately\r\nmoved south to Rome, perhaps in hope of\r\ncurrying favour with the Stuarts, who had\r\nlived in the city as celebrated exiles for\r\nsome years. Surely no dedicatee,\r\nwhatever their musical expertise, could\r\nfail to be delighted by music of such\r\naccomplishment and sunny elegance.\r\nEach of the five Allettamenti is cast in a\r\ntripartite quick-slow-quick form of sonata\r\nmovements, and they are crowned by a\r\nvirtuosic, two-part Capriccio which allots a\r\nstarring role to the solo violin in a set of\r\nincreasingly elaborate variations. All the\r\nsame, Tessarini departed for Naples\r\nshortly after their composition, and\r\ncontinued on his travels across Europe, finding\r\nreceptive audiences in France, England and the\r\nNetherland, where he died early in 1767.\r\nThis new recording has been made by an\r\nensemble of Italian early-music specialists who\r\nhave gathered for the purpose under the\r\nbanner of the Cappella Musicale Enrico Stuart.\r\nThey are led by the violinist Gabriele Pro, who is\r\njoined by Andrea Lattarulo (cello), Michele\r\nCarreca (theorbo and guitar) and Simone El\r\nOufir Pierini (harpsichord).
