Petersen studied photography in Sweden in the 1960s. He is known for his intimate and personal documentary-style black-and-white photography. For over three years from 1967 he photographed the late-night regulars in Café Lehmitz, a bar in Hamburg, Germany. \u003ci\u003eCafé Lehmitz\u003c\/i\u003e has since become regarded as a seminal book in the history of European photography \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eIn 1970 Petersen co-founded SAFTRA, the Stockholm group of photographers, with Kenneth Gustavsson.
