For more than twenty years, he owned an automotive die designing company and also worked as a computer systems analyst. Hicok, a recipient of two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as a Guggenheim, began writing poems when he was 20. In 2004, following the publication of his first four books, he received an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Along with \u003ci\u003eBreathe\u003c\/i\u003e, Hicok is the author of twelve previous collections, including \u003ci\u003eAnimal Soul\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThis Clumsy Living\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eElegy Owed\u003c\/i\u003e, shortlisted for the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award, and, most recently, \u003ci\u003eWater Look Away\u003c\/i\u003e. In 2013, \u003ci\u003eThis Clumsy Living\u003c\/i\u003e was translated into German by Judith Zander and released by Luxbooks. His writing has appeared in journals and magazines including \u003ci\u003eThe New Yorker\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003ePoetry Magazine\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ci\u003eThe American Poetry Review\u003c\/i\u003e, and has been anthologized in nine volumes of \u003ci\u003eThe Best American Poetry\u003c\/i\u003e.
