She has taught Swahili language and literature at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya from 1989-1999. She has been teaching Kiswahili as a foreign language since 1988, to students in study abroad programs in Kenya, in American university setting and through the University of Florida's Center for African Studies outreach programs in Gainesville, Florida.
