With the revolt \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esuppressed, he is assigned to a new imperial guard regiment for the restored \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewestern emperor, Valentinian II. During another transfer to the east Marcus \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esuffers a terrible personal tragedy from which it is impossible to recover. Another \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecivil war breaks out in the west and is suppressed with terrible casualties. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMarcus is appointed tribune and made a member of the personal staff of Stilicho, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe new generalissimo of the west. Further military adventures take place in \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGreece, Britain and Italy. A massive barbarian invasion of the west on December \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e31, 406 triggers political instability leading to revolts in both Britain and Italy.
