Rachael Maddox bravely shares her own story of statutory rape and recovery, inviting readers into the possibility that their current sex issues, fears, stunted confidence or self-worth troubles, private addictions, private depressions, or impossible-seeming dreams, could in fact be resulting from unresolved sexual trauma. There's a myth that so many women bear the burden of in today's world. The myth is that we're bad for the violations that happen to us, as well as the mess of the aftermath of those abuses. Secret Bad Girl not only dispels this myth, but illuminates exactly how you can transcend it, embodying the aliveness, resilience, and vitality available to you. Secret Bad Girl reads like works by Eve Ensler mixed with Peter Levine and a dash of Andrea Gibson. Stories. Science. Poetry. Most people never resolve their trauma because fear of entering into the territory of violation is so abrasive that they freeze. Rachael Maddox understands this fear and meets her readers in a place of compassion and grace, creating safe space for sacred healing.

About the Author
Rachael Maddox is a trauma resolution educator, coach, and guide. Makas, Ph.D. is excited to share her father's powerful story! Reading and writing have been her passion since she can remember. After finally retiring from the world of education, she has devoted her time to tell the wonderful, important, and heartwarming story of her dad's battlefield journey during the Southern Invasion of Germany in 1944 during World War II. Dr. Makas has based her life values of those her dad taught her throughout all the wonderful years together. The two also shared a deep love and respect for history. Dr. Makas enjoyed a career in education that spanned more than 40 years and included being a University of Michigan-Flint professor, a public school teacher, an administrator, and a consultant for failing schools in the areas of curriculum and accreditation through her company Curriculum Connections, LLC. Dr. Makas earned degrees from Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University, and Saginaw Valley State University. She obtained her doctorate in educational leadership from Oakland University. Dr. Makas wrote A Young Man on the Front Line: Lessons of War from her late father's perspective by compiling the stories he told while she was growing up, along with his battlefield journal entries that chronicled both the tragic and amusing stories of his World War II experience. U.S. Army Sergeant Chris Makas fought on the front line of the Southern Invasion of Germany in 1944 as part of Company B, 255th Regiment, 1st Battalion, 63rd Infantry Division. After helping to liberate Germany and the concentration camp at Landsberg from the Nazis, he returned to Detroit in 1946 to marry and raise three children. She authored two educational books: From Mandate to Achievement (Corwin, 2010) and Career Pathways: Preparing Students for Life co-authored with Pam Ill (Corwin, 2004). Elaine is very proud of her four sons: Mark (Rochelle), Benjamin, Jacob, and Samuel; and her three grandchildren: Sarah, Ethan, and Joshua. She enjoys life with Fred List and engaging in writing, oil painting, nature, horseback riding, and traveling. I wrote this book to pay tribute to my dad's life and story, says Dr. Makas, who lives in Frankenmuth, Michigan. I think young people, millennials and Baby Boomers alike, will enjoy becoming fellow travelers with my father on his journey of war, trauma, adaptation, and self-acceptance while contemplating universal lessons of war. Writing his story during her battle with cancer strengthened her to endure grueling treatments that resulted in remission. Dr. Makas hopes that middle and high school social studies and English teachers will use the book to help young people understand how World War II helped shape our world today.Atkins, Elizabeth Ann: - Elizabeth Ann Atkins is Co-Creator of Two Sisters Writing & Publishing, an Emmy Award nominated TV show host, a journalist, book coach, inspirational speaker, certified meditation teacher, a fitness enthusiast, and author of 33 books. Dr. Makas earned degrees from Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and Saginaw Valley State Universities. He fought on the front line of the Southern Invasion of Germany in 1944 as part of Company B, 255th Regiment, 1st Battalion, 63rd Infantry Division. Elaine is very proud of her four sons, Mark (Rochelle), Benjamin, Jacob, and Samuel, and her three grandchildren, Sarah, Ethan, and Joshua. She enjoys life with Fred List and engaging in writing, oil painting, nature, horseback riding, and traveling. I wrote this book to pay tribute to my dad's life and story, says Dr. Makas, who lives in Frankenmuth, Michigan. I think young people, millennials, and Baby Boomers alike will enjoy becoming fellow travelers with my father on his journey of war, trauma, adaptation, and self-acceptance while contemplating universal lessons of war. Writing his story during her battle with cancer strengthened her to endure grueling treatments that resulted in remission. Dr. Makas hopes that middle and high school social studies and English teachers will use the book to help young people understand how World War II helped shape our world today.Atkins, Elizabeth Ann Ann: - Elizabeth Ann Atkins is Co-Creator of Two Sisters Writing & Publishing, an Emmy Award nominated TV show host, a journalist, book coach, inspirational speaker, certified meditation teacher, a fitness enthusiast, and author of 33 books. A Scottish privateer and Royal Navy officer, Selkirk was marooned by his captain for four years and four months between 1704 and 1709 on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean. When I was nine, Child Protective Services removed me and my siblings from my mother's home, a known crack house, due to neglect. After an extended stay at a children's shelter in San Antonio, Texas, we were adopted by our Uncle Chevo, a Sergeant in the Army, and his wife, Laura. We moved to Hawaii, where they were stationed, thinking it would be paradise. For me, it became a living hell. What followed was 16 years of harrowing abuse, brainwashing, manipulation, stalking, physical abuse, sexual assault, and the stripping away of me, as a little girl, bit by bit, until there was nothing left. I became a sex slave to my sadistic aunt and uncle. Ultimately, I gave birth to three beautiful babies, each of whom was his. We began working on it in response to the outrage we felt over the Access Hollywood Tape, in which Trump openly admitted that he randomly assaulted women. While previous presidential candidates' campaigns had been derailed when sex scandals were reported by the press (Gary Hart, for example), Trump seemingly faced no consequences, even when multiple accusations of physical molestation and rape were made against him. His election and imperviousness to charges of assault seemed to signal a new step in the normalization of rape culture. That while lamentable, sexual harassment and assault didn't really matter in the political arena. Or at least had no public service consequences for perpetrators. It was in this climate that we began soliciting stories, poems, essays and nonfiction pieces about the assault and attempted assault that is a striking aspect of so many women's psychosexual histories. The original working title of the book was "Rape Escapes" because the pieces we solicited focused on deflection, escape and survival. We renamed the volume "Trigger Warnings" to set a different tone and to reflect the fact that so many of the pieces-workshopped and developed in public readings-required trigger warnings to the audience. As we worked on the book, sexual harassment, rape, and the brutalization of women continued to serially dominate the news cycle. Even though Trump himself remained immune to prosecution, other powerful men-many in the media industry-were fired or resigned in the face of the newly emergent #MeToo Movement's revelations. Every time we sponsored public readings of contributions to this volume, audience members would approach us to say that they, too, had a story, and ask if we were we still accepting submissions. We were also asked why we felt the need to tell such painful stories. "Because of Maya Angelou," we invariably said. Angelou was raped when quite young and lost the ability to speak for 5 years. When she finally recovered her voice, she found she had a lot to say. Her wonderful autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is banned in many schools because of its frank and graphic depiction of rape. People frequently asked Angelou why she'd felt the need to describe the assault in such detail. Her response comes very close to our purpose in compiling this volume. She habitually said that she wanted people to understand the complexities of rape, and that she hoped any rape survivor reading her work would be able to move beyond blaming herself, open her own cage, and fly free. We hold the same wish for our readers, and recommend they read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as a companion volume. All but one of the pieces in this anthology were authored by writers who belong to The Writers Guild at Bloomington, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting written and spoken word in Bloomington, Indiana and its environs. Most of us are published writers and all of us have other careers. Ruth Novaczek, the author of the Introductory piece in the book, is a London-based filmmaker and artist. We contacted her when she posted an earlier version of this story on her Facebook page. It was such a strong piece, we thought it would be perfect as a kind of thematic introduction. "Rape-escapes," she wrote when she sent us permission to use her story, "are a good way to show that every young woman has probably had one, and we're the lucky ones."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0831/4771/8930/files/img_4ae0f1ce-324e-44b5-aba1-d47a7d028608.jpg?v=1740411880
