Early in the morning, as if it's a down quilt, the fog covers the whole city from the bottom to the top. In just a couple of hours the sun is raising and the air gets very hot. At the same time the ice cold wind comes from the ocean and makes you put a jacket on. Strolling down the street is not an easy thing to do. At first it seems that you are walking on the plain the next moment you feel like you are climbing a mountain. It's because of the landscape. San Francisco lies on the hills that slowly slide down to the valley. These contrasts are featured in everything - in architecture, food, and way of living. Modern minimalistic skyscrapers easily mix with the Victorian style historical monuments.
It's a city of religion
Having been founded by Spanish explorers, the city shows a lot of religious beginnings. At first San Francisco was a Dolores mission and then it became a city which was named after the beloved catholic saint Francisco de As s. The hippie movement had its beginnings in this city during the 1920's. The movement had a great impact on the lives of many generations after. The echo of hippie culture can still be observed in modern art, literature and social movements.
It's a city of business.
The city has a high acumen for business. San Francisco developed a lot during the gold rush and by the middle of 1920's became one of the most expensive cities in the US.
Not to mention that the latest discoveries in scientific world are born here every day. It takes just 30 minutes and you are in Silicon Valley. It's a place where the smartest people on Earth decide in what reality we are going to live in future. All the biggest IT and pharmaceutical companies are situated there, maybe now somebody is creating a virtual reality or a cure of cancer.
It's a city of romance.
This city, of course, is filled with romantic spirit. You can feel it everywhere: in the air, in the rooftops, in the small cozy cable cars, that are circling around the city. You can even feel it in the numerous ordinary cafes, where you can try the most delicious sandwich and coffee. Even the sightseeing attractions have this slight romantic vibe. These are epic Golden Gate Bridge and the park of the same name, placed by sea shore, gloomy and dark Alcatraz, famous for epic Al Capone being convicted and placed in it. The biggest and the oldest Chinatown is situated there too.
San Francisco is very an unpredictable many-sided and bright city. Going there don't forget to take some warm clothes. Make sure you walk all the city up and down, meet new people, have lunch at some casual restaurants and just simple enjoy your time spending in this unique city.
At last, remember, going to San Francisco you can lose heart to this city, because it's a city of love.
I hope, my photos will help you to get a better idea of the atmosphere of the city and will make you want to visit it. The golden rocks, effervescent waters, teeming forests, meadows and streams of Yellowstone have been dually christened by the United Nations as a World Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site. This is North America's Serengeti, where 1,700 kinds of plants sustain 60 mammal and 311 bird species. Here, 150 lakes and 500 streams give birth to mighty rivers and thrive with 24 species of fish. The generally placid flow of these watercourses is spectacularly interrupted by nearly 300 waterfalls. Like inverted waterfalls, Yellowstone's 300 geysers erupt skyward, flying in the face of the old adage, and arguing instead, that what goes down must also come up! Less flashy, but equally intriguing, are the geysers' cousins: hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots and travertine terraces. These geothermal features are variations on the physics of boiling water, are ten thousand in number, comprise half of the planet's total population of geothermal features, and yet are concentrated in the 2.2 million acre square in the upper left corner of Wyoming's map simply labeled: Yellowstone. Here, tourism became a science. Here, the U.S. Army defeated extinction by protecting the last of the American bison. Here, big government and big business united to preserve something greater than the revenue it generated. Here, preservation became an ethic. Yellowstone is the example touted to help justify the establishment and protection of 3,600 other national parks in 143 different countries. It's an adventurer's dream, meticulously planned. It's the first and last word of the favorite vacation story. It's where many first fall in love: with the outdoors, with geology, with wildlife, with history, and with photography. It's also where you can fall in love with all those same things, for all the same reasons, plus many more. It's the "every-park" for everyone. In the first half of the 20th century, the industrial town was one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Utah. Murray City was hailed as an example of an independent municipality with its own power plant, waterworks, school district, and so on. The commercial core was surrounded by dairies, poultry ranches, and truck farms. The historic photographs within these pages depict all facets of life in the region, and recall the tumultuous changes that came along with the advent of mining, the demise of the Native American community, and the appearance of new industries. Today, as technology paves the way for a bright future, the signs of life in an earlier era are scattered throughout this mountainous region--abandoned homesteads and forlorn mining sites evoke memories of a past when the first mine prospectors dug deep into the mountains, uncovering thousands of tons of precious ores for the insatiable engines of commerce and industry. The discovery of valuable minerals such as talc, bauxite, and shale put the region at the forefront of domestic mining, and shaped the overall character of the growing community. Captured in this volume are the enterprising settlers who first worked the land; the homes, farms, and industries they built; and the major environmental, social, and cultural transformations that occurred in Northwest Georgia throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. North Smithfield tells the story of the town's small mill and farm villages dotting the landscape. Evolving from the vision and determination of Wiley Harrison Bush, Winder became a regional giant, birthed from its rich agricultural heritage and its new industries of manufacturing and transportation. By 1920, Winder was the seat of the six-year-old county of Barrow and had been acclaimed by regional newspapers as "a stemwinder" of a town. Winder's early architectural simplicity was joined by products of high style design as the city evolved from the Jug Tavern--now long gone. Like many American cities, Winder has lost some of its foundational buildings to demolition or fire. Still, many remain to tell the story of how this traveler's rest became known by 1950 as the "Work Clothes Capital of the World."
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0831/4771/8930/files/img_e7d3eb79-ec8d-425c-abc5-2c428d1e006e.jpg?v=1728267684
forest-hills-9781531666019
Forest Hills
Forest Hills grew out of an experiment--the transformation of 142 undeveloped acres into America's first garden city. The Ozarks's wilderness became a hideout for bushwhackers following the Civil War. The masked "Bald Knobbers" developed as vigilantes to defend mountain families. Today, the "Baldknobbers" are known as Branson's first musical show. In 1894, tours began in Marble Cave, one of 8,000 Ozarks caves. Now known as Marvel Cave, it boasts the largest cave entrance room in the United States and remains a main attraction at Silver Dollar City's theme park. Many visitors are lured by the natural beauty, healthful atmosphere, and recreational activities offered in the Ozarks. Harold Bell Wright penned The Shepherd of the Hills while recuperating here at the beginning of the 20th century. A wave of tourism to the Branson area followed its 1907 publication. Legend has it that the lush vegetation prompted Shields to bestow the name of his homeland: Dublin, Ireland. Dublin, Ohio, would remain a sleepy little burg until the 1960s and 1970s, when three major changes led to explosive growth: the construction of Interstate 270, the development of Jack Nicklaus's Muirfield Village Golf Club and residential neighborhood, and the arrival of Ashland, Inc.
