This urban status exists despite cross-generational human persecution through shooting of individuals and indirect felling of forests, their apparent preferred nesting habitat. Using conversational prose, the natural history of the bird's diet, including bird feeder use and disease concerns, courtship behavior, and the ecological themes of breeding density, reproductive success, and adult survivorship are described. There too is a focus on how and why fieldwork is conducted on this ubiquitous city dweller who preys mostly on birds, or 'urban fast food.' How urban birds may differ from their rural counterparts is addressed, and especially highlighted is the novel aspect of reproductive deceit in this red-eyed, blue-backed predator, as, unlike all other birds of prey studied to date, it is highly promiscuous. Rosenfield is Professor of Ecology at the Department of Biology, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he teaches Ecology, Ornithology, and Raptor Ecology. His courses highlight experiential, hands-on fieldwork for undergraduate students with Cooper's Hawks, including two field-courses in tundra settings, Subarctic Ecology and Survey of Gyrfalcons in Alaska, and Arctic Ecology and Survey of Peregrine Falcons in Greenland. He has made 20 trips to Greenland to study Peregrine Falcons. His research with raptors began with capture and banding of migratory hawks, falcons, and owls at the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in his home town of Duluth, Minnesota in 1973. This experience sparked his M.S. research at UWSP on the nesting biology of Broad-winged Hawks in Wisconsin during 1976-1981. Concurrent with this thesis work he was invited by the state of Wisconsin in 1980 to investigate the breeding status of the Cooper's Hawk, a bird deemed at the time to be in population peril. This work led to the discovery of a thriving nesting population, and launched a 38-year, ongoing research of population, behavioral, and molecular aspects of nesting Cooper's Hawks. Some of this research was used to complete his Ph.D. in Zoology at North Dakota State University in 1990. His Wisconsin investigations expanded to the prairies of North Dakota and to British Columbia to collaborate on other populations of Cooper's Hawks. He has also conducted research on the possible effects of forest fragmentation on breeding songbirds. Bob has served as a Board Member of the Raptor Research Foundation, and represented this international organization on committees that evaluated the validity of delisting the American Peregrine Falcon, and the proposed listing of the Northern Goshawk, both under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Rosenfield has published over 110 scientific journal articles, monographs, and technical reports on birds, including over 60 on Cooper's Hawks. His work has been covered in numerous media outlets for the public, including Discovery Channel, National Wildlife, Smithsonian Institute, Birder's World, National Geographic, and Sports Afield. He received the William A. Burnham Memorial Award for Arctic Research, and has also been honored with 12 awards at his campus for distinguished service, and excellence in teaching and scholarship. During my third year of college, my roommate got a bit paranoid and decided to flee the USA. What can I say? He was Physics major so I didn't understand most of what he talked about. He did explain that he had bought all the materials and plans to build a sailboat but it would take too long so he was leaving by air for Norway in the morning and I could have it all for one dollar. I paid up instantly. So it was once again, I was touched by the hand of the Baby Jesus. I did the only sensible thing, and dropped out of college to start construction. I built a Brown 42 foot SeaRunner Trimaran in one year-Sailed her down to South America from San Francisco and then through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean. Upon returning to the USA I looked at my resume. It was not pretty. I took the only job that was available to someone with my talents...I worked as a Beaver Wrangler or Wild Animal Trainer for a Walt Disney affiliate. Later I worked as a contractor and builder of eclectic million dollar custom homes. We built the unbuildable...spiral houses, boat shaped houses, and houses made of rain barrels. We built a Japanese house for a Hollywood movie producer. I learned Hollywood was wonderful and horrible at the same time. After seven years, I fled Hollywood for the Northwest and ended up in Seattle. There, I entered into the computer business and went on to build computer Infrastructure for Amazon.com and Zillow.com. In the early twentieth century, Indigenous woolworkers on southern Vancouver Island began knitting what are now called Cowichan sweaters, named for the largest of the Coast Salish tribes in the region. Drawing on their talents as blanket weavers and basket makers, and adapting techniques from European settlers, Coast Salish women created sweaters that fuelled a bustling local economy. Knitters across the country copied the popular sweaters to create their own versions of the garment. The Cowichan sweater embodies industry and economy, politics and race relations, and is a testament to the innovation and resilience of Coast Salish families.

Sylvia Olsen married into the Tsartlip First Nation near Victoria, BC, and developed relationships with Coast Salish knitters through her family's sweater shop. Olsen was inspired to explore the juncture of her English/Scottish/European heritage and Coast Salish life experiences, bringing to light deeply personal questions about Canadian knitting traditions. In 2015, she and her partner Tex embarked on a cross-Canada journey from the Salish Sea to the Atlantic Ocean with stops in more than forty destinations to promote her books, conduct workshops, exchange experiences with other knitters and, Olsen hoped, discover a fresh appreciation for Canada.

Along the way, with stops in urban centres as well as smaller communities like Sioux Lookout, ON, and Shelburne, NS, Olsen observed that the knitters of Canada are as diverse as their country's geography. Of all the sights that intrigued and awed, one that stayed with me since then was the sight of a lonely barge, called a scow, sitting precariously just a few hundred yards upstream from the precipice of the Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. I wondered how it got there, and I was told bits and pieces of what others had heard, of what was, of course, hearsay and inaccurate. His reactions to the foreign country are mixed and ambivalent: he is critical of Canada's Old World Catholicism, feudalism, and an alien British military presence while most of his references to America and Americans are favorable. But if one looks closely, positive reactions to Canadian society and negative reactions to American society do exist within the essay. A YANKEE IN CANADA is a study in paradox, the paradox being due to a man stunned by his only international experience. In this sense A YANKEE IN CANADA parallels Mark Twain's INNOCENTS ABROAD in that both authors are experiencing culture shock expressed with all the elements of a mental twilight zone of grays, not just black and white. The text is complemented with original art and especially crisp photographs that demonstrate this bird's natural history.

About the Author
Rosenfield, Robert: - Robert N. The seas and islands of the Siberian Arctic are a serious challenge to the navigator, but powerful icebreakers have opened the way to the Northeast Passage, a region which is home for a world-beating range of superb animals. Polar bears and walrus are common, some of the world's rarest birds are everyday sightings, some of the seabirds breed here in uncountable numbers. The islands are largely unexplored and scenically magnificent, a magnet for expedition vessels and adventurous tourists. Icebreaker technology and retreating ice have opened the Russian Arctic to a potential increase of maritime traffic between the Atlantic and Pacific. This is a region largely unexplored, with spectacular icescapes and glaciated islands rich in wildlife.
