Our own Moon has had a profound influence on Earth, not only through tidal effects, but even on the behaviour of some marine animals. Many remarkable things have been discovered about the moons of the giant outer planets from Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, and other spacecraft. Scientists have glimpsed volcanic activity on Io, found oceans of water on Titan, and captured photos of icy geysers bursting from Enceladus. There is a deep structure to the world which at the same time is simple, elegant, and beautiful. Where did these laws and these constants come from? And why are the laws so fruitful when written in the language of mathematics?

Peter Atkins considers the minimum effort needed to equip the Universe with its laws and its constants. He explores the origin of the conservation of energy, of electromagnetism, of classical and quantum mechanics, and of thermodynamics, showing how all these laws spring from deep symmetries. The revolutionary result is a short but immensely rich weaving together of the fundamental ideas of physics. With his characteristic wit, erudition, and economy, Atkins sketches out how the laws of Nature can spring from very little. Having demoted Earth from its unique position in the cosmos to one of mediocrity, Copernicus set in motion a revolution in scientific thought. This perspective has influenced our thinking for centuries. However, recent evidence challenges the Copernican Principle, hinting that we do in fact live in a special place, at a special time, as the product of a chain of unlikely events. But can we be significant if the Sun is still just one of a billion trillion stars in the observable universe? And what if our universe is just one of a multitude of others-a single slice of an infinity of parallel realities?

In The Copernicus Complex, the renowned astrophysicist Caleb Scharf takes us on a scientific adventure, from tiny microbes within the Earth to distant exoplanets, probability theory, and beyond, arguing that there is a solution to this contradiction, a third way of viewing our place in the cosmos, if we weigh the evidence properly. As Scharf explains, we do occupy an unusual time in a 14-billion-year-old universe, in a somewhat unusual type of solar system surrounded by an ocean of unimaginable planetary diversity: hot Jupiters with orbits of less than a day, planet-size rocks spinning around dead stars, and a wealth of alien super-Earths. Yet life here is built from the most common chemistry in the universe, and we are a snapshot taken from billions of years of biological evolution. Bringing us to the cutting edge of scientific discovery, Scharf shows how the answers to fundamental questions of existence will come from embracing the peculiarity of our circumstance without denying the Copernican vision.

With characteristic verve, Scharf uses the latest scientific findings to reconsider where we stand in the balance between cosmic significance and mediocrity, order and chaos. Presenting a compelling and bold view of our true status, The Copernicus Complex proposes a way forward in the ultimate quest: determining life's abundance, not just across this universe but across all realities.

About the Author
Caleb Scharf is the director of the Columbia Astrobiology Center. In addition to constituting a major scientific endeavor, astrobiology is one of the most popular topics in astronomy, and is of growing interest to a broad community of thinkers from across the academic spectrum. In this volume, distinguished philosophers, theologians, anthropologists, historians and scientists discuss the big questions about how the discovery of extraterrestrial life, whether intelligent or microbial, would impact society. Their remarkable and often surprising findings challenge our foundational concepts of what the discovery of alien life may hold for humankind. It solves essential mysteries of UFO behavior that have been well-documented and unsolved for over fifty years. How is this possible? Very simple. The Center of UFO Studies (CUFOS) has for 30 years been accumulating a searchable database of UFO eyewitness reports. To date they number 209,000. To my knowledge no one has taken a serious look at these reports. I now have. All the conclusions in the book come directly from interpreting the eye witness reports. The basic conclusions were an inevitable consequence of applying standard physics principles to the reports. The fundamental revelation, that UFOs possess gravitationally negative mass, is an inescapable consequence of the fact that UFOs sometimes "levitate" people and cars. Gravitationally negative mass, when spun at high speed, allows UFOs to negate inertia. This fact suddenly throws the whole field of UFO behavior open. Now essentially all the activities of UFO can be understood. They can not only be qualitatively understood, but they can be calculated and predicted in detail. We do the calculations in the book and provide diagrams. We not only explain how UFOs kill inertia, but how they float in gravity, why they do zig-zag motions instead of smooth turns, why the sometimes exhibit "falling leaf" motion, how they propel themselves, and why they sometimes levitate objects. We explain the famous EM effects of car engines and headlights dying near UFOs, and why they do not create sonic booms at supersonic speed.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0831/4771/8930/files/img_0209b110-5c88-4678-931c-b9b498770cd4.jpg?v=1727967594
rockets-and-people-volume-i-9781484842676
Rockets and People: Volume I
Much has been written in the West on the history of the Soviet space program but few Westerners have read direct first-hand accounts of the men and women who were behind the many Russian accomplishments in exploring space. Chertok devotes a significant portion of the volume to the early years of Soviet human space flight in the early 1960's. These include a chapter on the Vostok and Voskhod programs, which left an indelible mark on early years of the "space race," a lengthy meditation on the origins and early missions of the Soyuz space program, the flight and death of cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov during the very first piloted Soyuz flight in 1967. Additional chapters cover robotic programs such as the Molniya communications satellite system, the Zenit spy satellite program, and the Luna series of probes that culminated in the world's first survivable landing of a probe on the surface of the Moon. Chertok also devotes several chapters to the development of early generations of Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles and missile defense systems. Chertok's chapter on the Cuban Missile Crisis provides a radically unique perspective on the crisis, from the point of view of those who would have been responsible for unleashing nuclear Armageddon in 1962 had Kennedy and Khrushchev not been able to agree on a stalemate. Two further chapters cover the untimely deaths of the most important luminaries of the era: Sergey Korolev and Yuriy Gagarin. Finally, historians of Soviet science will find much of the interest in the concluding chapter focused on the relationship between the space program and the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Chertok was born in 1912 in Poland, and his family moved to Moscow when he was three years old. Academician Chertok began his career as an electrician in Moscow before joining the aircraft design bureau of Viktor Bolkhovitinov in 1934. In 1946, he joined the newly established NII-88 institute as head of the control systems department and worked hand-in-hand with famed Chief Designer Sergey Korolev. Chertok became one of Korolev's closest aides in developing control systems for ballistic missiles and spacecraft, eventually becoming deputy chief designer of the famous OKB-1, the design organization that spun off from NII-88 in 1956 and was responsible for a remarkable string of space firsts of the early Soviet space program. Chertok participated in every major project at OKB-1, now the S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia, until his retirement from active work in 1991. Among his many contributions to the Russian space industry, he was closely involved in the launch of the world's first satellite, Sputnik, on October 4, 1957 and the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. Ken's university thesis (and his first publication) was Design and Construction of the Isaac Newton 98-inch Telescope (Strathclyde University, 1970); since then he has published articles on optical design including Blink Comparison, (BAA Journal Vol 87, p 94) and Method of Radially Supporting Large Mirrors (Vol 87, p 154). He has made many contributions to the Astronomical Society of Victoria newsletter and was for three years the Editor of the 'N'Daba' newsletter of the Natal Centre, Astronomical Society of Southern Africa. He is the author of "Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs" (Springer, 2011) and "Grating Spectroscopes and How to Use Them" (Springer, 2012).
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0831/4771/8930/files/img_188125ef-5a40-47f0-b721-274d6a343bff.jpg?v=1728492580
australias-little-space-travellers-the-flight-shaped-tektites-of-australia-9783319460512
Australia's Little Space Travellers: The Flight Shaped Tektites of Australia

Introduction and History

Theories of Tektite Origin

The True Origin of the Australian Tektites

Where are Tektites Found in Australia?

Primary Shapes of the Australian Tektites

Flight Shaping of Australian Tektites

The Classical Flanged Buttons

Elongate Flanged Forms

Miniature Flanged Forms

Microtektites

Hollow tektites

Asymmetric Flanged Forms

Fragmentation of Flanged Forms

References

About the Author

Don McColl has been involved with Australian meteorites and tektites for over fifty years. His early graduate years were in the early sixties, when he was studying at Melbourne University, and spent time in the company of George Baker whose work on the tektites of Australia was monumental. It is difficult to believe now how much controversy there was at that time, about the nature and origin of the superbly shaped Australian tektites. George Baker never had any doubts, but then he did have the advantage of having the finest shaped tektites in the world virtually at his doorstep. During the author's working life, which included curating for three different national museums, he continued to take a special interest in these remarkable specimens. In recent retirement years, he and his wife Lois have amused themselves finding a large number of stony and iron meteorites, plus great numbers of the flight textured tektites, in all kinds of country, along the tracts of inland Australia where the tektites fell in such abundance so long ago. In 2011 together with Svend Buhl of Hamburg, he produced the recent book, "Henbury Craters and Meteorites, their Discovery, History and Study", and it seemed logical to follow this with something about the tektites.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0831/4771/8930/files/img_29a937b7-91c7-4dfb-a627-f2abe42d9c58.jpg?v=1728492675
all-the-wonder-that-would-be-exploring-past-notions-of-the-future-9783319517582
All the Wonder That Would Be: Exploring Past Notions of the Future

It has been argued that science fiction (SF) gives a kind of weather forecast - not the telling of a fortune but rather the rough feeling of what the future might be like. Supermassive black holes are important to understanding of the formation of galaxies in the early Universe. Old white dwarfs are used to calibrate the age of the Universe. Mergers of neutron stars and black holes are the sources of intense gravitational waves. Compact Objects in Astrophysics gives a comprehensive introduction and up-to-date overview of the physical processes behind these objects, covering the most recent results, including all relevant observations. After a presentation of the taxonomy of compact objects, the basic principles of general relativity are given.
